Beyond Finale: Where Exploration Meets Great eMTB Riding
Leave the iconic seaside trails behind and discover a wilder side of Liguria. This full-day eMTB journey is designed for riders who crave true exploration, raw nature, and hidden history.
Our adventure begins high up at the historic Forte del Melogno, where we immediately immerse ourselves in the ancient beech forests of Barbottina . From here, we dive into the remote terrain of the Bardineto Outdoor Area, conquering iconic mountain tracks like Appendaun and Pianfieno.
After a solid dose of this rugged mountain riding, we pedal our e-bikes toward the ancient, stone-walled village of Castelvecchio. This is where the landscape shifts, and we begin our climb up toward the wild Val Varatella area. This is a completely different way of experiencing this area—a unique loop that links forgotten paths, hidden valleys and spectacular viewpoints, revealing a side of the Finale Outdoor Region that few riders ever discover.
Get ready for big battery-powered climbs, remote singletracks and an authentic side of Liguria that most riders never discover.

RIDE INFO // WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE TRAILS
Ride beyond the legend. High up at the start, the massive military stone walls of Forte del Melogno set a powerful mood before we dive straight into the Barbottina forest. Here, you will ride through a stunning, deep contrast of vibrant green leaves and the silver-grey trunks of ancient, giant beech trees. As we pedal deeper, the sea completely disappears from view, replaced by a magnificent, immersive mountain atmosphere.
Dropping into the Bardineto trails, the air changes. You will instantly smell the crisp scent of alpine pines and rich earth. The trails here have a true mountain soul: expect a technical, rewarding mix of natural dirt, exposed roots, and sharp, challenging rocks.
After this section, we stop at a local bakery for a well-earned break and a taste of authentic Ligurian flavors. This is also the perfect opportunity for a quick e-bike recharge before the second half of the adventure.
Next, we pedal toward Castelvecchio, a medieval stone village that literally looks suspended on a cloud of rock. To reach it, we tackle the spectacular Super Canaletta trail —a long, high-speed rollercoaster of a track. The first half tests your focus with natural roots, while the second half throws you onto pure, raw rock.
Finally, we enter the Val Varatella area, one of the most overlooked corners of the Liguria Region. The riding becomes more flowing and less demanding, allowing us to fully appreciate the scale of the landscape around us. Remote valleys, forgotten paths and endless views create a completely different side of Liguria—one that very few riders ever experience.

We are riders, explorers and storytellers of the places we call home.

TRAVEL TIPS
LOGISTICS
GETTING HERE: The main hubs are Nice (NCE) and Genoa (GOA). Milan (MXP) is an option but requires a longer transfer. The tour starts in Finalborgo and ends in Finalborgo, so plan your travel accordingly.
FOOD & DIETARY: We love local flavors! If you have allergies or intolerances, please let us know at the time of booking so we can coordinate with the trattorias.
ON-TOUR CARE
HEALTH PRIORITIES: Your health and safety on tour is our top priority.
LOCAL ADVICE: You should always consult your own doctor or physician before travelling to new countries to seek their advice on health matters abroad.
VACCINATIONS & WATER: No vaccinations are required for visiting our tour areas. While tap water is generally safe, we recommend bottled or filtered water, which will be readily available throughout the trip.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS: Please let us know if you have any special food requirements, allergies, or pre-existing conditions your guides should know about.
TRAVEL INSURANCE (Mandatory): As a condition of booking, you must be insured against medical and personal accident risks. Your policy must explicitly cover mountain biking. We also strongly recommend coverage for trip cancellation and baggage (including your bike).
FINANCIAL TIPS
CURRENCY & CASH: The local currency is Euro (€). While cards are accepted in cities, cash is essential for remote mountain huts and small bars.
ATM MACHINES: You can find ATMs in Finale Ligure, Dolceacqua, and Nice. We suggest withdrawing cash before heading into the smaller villages.
TIPPING: In Italy, tipping is a sign of appreciation for great service. If you’ve had an epic time, a tip for your guides and local staff is always a nice gesture!
WHEN TO BOOK THIS TOUR
The best season for this adventure goes from spring until December. In peak winter (January and February), you will definitely find heavy snow in the Barbottina forest, and the Bardineto area gets freezing cold. On the plus side, because of the alpine altitude, this is the absolute perfect tour to escape the intense summer heat of the coast!
Cancellation Policy
A 30% deposit is required to secure your booking and is non-refundable if the tour is cancelled by the guest.
Your safety—and ours—always comes first. If extreme weather or official weather warnings make riding unsafe, we’ll cancel the tour and issue a voucher for the full value of your deposit, which can be used on a future Trails Unlimited tour.
Whenever conditions allow, we’ll adapt the itinerary rather than cancel the day. We only cancel when we believe it isn’t safe to ride.
